The Huffington Post article was a re-hash by Matt Taibbi of the HSBC money laundering scandal that came out just before Christmas.
The board members of HSBC completely escaped all punishment and the shareholders only got a small fine.
The stock price of HSBC rose after the deal because the market thought that HSBC would get a much harsher punishment.
It should of got a much harsher punishment.
Board members of HSBC should have received lengthy jail terms and HSBC's American license should of been taken away from them, together with a circa $20bn fine.

Large scale money laundering is endemic amongst the big banks - just about ALL of them do it.
It is an integral part of their business model.
And there is a heck of lot of drugs money to launder.
