Homicide rates and levels of violence are a SOCIAL issue NOT a gun control issue Updated 02/06

Posted on 04:53 by Unknown
Homicide rates and levels of violence are a reflection of social issues, levels of poverty, the competence or otherwise of the government in reducing crime rates and general levels of crime, corruption and general lawlessness or otherwise in any given country or region.

They are NOT and never have been linked to any government bans on weapons, weapon types or gun control.
Criminals will always have access to illegal weapons with guns being the weapon of choice - even if guns or knives are completely banned.

High homicide rates are associated with countries that have a major drugs problem, criminally corrupt governments or are a war zone - the ultimate lawlessness situation.

Just about every household in Switzerland owns one or more guns.

If you compare Switzerland to the US & UK - you will see that all of the social and lawlessness problems are far less severe in Switzerland than they are in either the US or the UK.

The homicide rate in Switzerland is 1.2 per 100,000 people.

In the US the homicide rate is 4.7 per 100,000 or 4 times higher than Switzerland.

http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/murder-rates-nationally-and-state

In the UK where guns are now completely banned the murder rate is 1.4 per 100,000 or slightly higher than Switzerland. It is now back to the level before guns were completely banned in 1997 (after increasing more than 50% after the ban).

In America some of the highest homicide rates occur in states that have the tightest gun control laws.
Homicide rates are a reflection of the level of general lawlessness and poverty in each state - the level of gun control laws has little if any effect.

In BOTH the US & UK the homicides rates are a SOCIAL, crime and corruption problem not a weapon type or gun control issue.

The level of violent crime also reflects the general lawlessness and social problems within any given country or region.

They are also greatly affected by the level of drug trafficking within a particular region.

Drug trafficking and large scale illegal drug dealing leads to significantly increased criminality.

The UK now has violent crime rates 5 times that of the United States.
Violent crime rates are exacerbated if criminals are fairly sure the victim will be unarmed - the risk of something bad happening to the criminal is so much smaller.

Belgium has one of the highest violent crime rates in the developed world and very few guns.

The level of homicides and violent crime would drastically decrease if the major source of criminal activity were to be taken away.
The major source of criminal activity is the fact that drugs are criminalized and there is a lot of illegal money to be made from them.
Just like there was a lot of illegal money to be made when alcohol prohibition was introduced into the United States.
Alcohol prohibition increased violent crime and the rise of organized criminal gangs in America in the 1920's.

Belgium has far higher violent crime rates than neighboring Netherlands. The Netherlands has a relaxed attitude to drug taking and marijuana consumption

In BOTH the US & UK homicides and violent crime rates are a SOCIAL, crime and corruption problem not a weapon type or gun control issue.

There are LOADS of factors making up this problem.
These are some of them.

High levels of criminality in general caused by the prevalence of drugs, the amount of drug taking and the prevalence of drug gangs.

High levels of criminality due to a general air of corruption and general lawlessness at all levels of government.

Poor levels of education - both countries have an appalling education system for the poor or less academically gifted.
There are a lack of opportunities for training in a decent paying job for the non academically gifted.
Plumbers and car mechanics earn good money but you cannot leave school at 14 to do an apprenticeship in a trade that you might be very good at, even if that might be the right thing for you to do.
Current education policy encourages a higher school drop out rate and encourages a life of crime or misbehavior.

Low levels of social mobility - both the US & UK are now in 2 of the worst 3 spots for large developed countries in terms of social mobility.

High levels of unemployment amongst the young - lack of decent paying job prospects. Crime and drug dealing seem to offer better "job" prospects.

The ghettoisation of the poor - the projects in the US - sink estates in the UK.
Young kids are subject to peer pressure to behave irresponsibly or criminally or to join the local drugs gang.

High levels of poverty generally.

A disrespect of the authorities because the authorities abuse their powers generally and there is a lot of corruption amongst them.

A lack of community spirit which might otherwise turn young people away from a criminal path.

Rampant greed and consumerism.
People are not valued by their human worth, they are valued by their material worth and power and influence over others.
Degenerate Z list celebrities get far more respect than people who run local soup kitchens or youth clubs.
Get your kicks now and don't worry about tomorrow or the harm you might do to others or yourself.
Modern culture and bling.

High levels of selfishness and low levels of charity or just helping out your fellow man.
Nobody has got any time to help someone else any more - life is such a rush.

Low levels of moral responsibility in general.
If the President can go around murdering people with kill lists and ignores the Rule of Law and the Constitution at will, the TSA routinely sexually abuse passengers and terrorize young children, the cops on the street routinely abuse, it does not exactly engender moral responsibility amongst the general population.

The general contempt for government and the authorities that their general behavior engenders.

The constant scaremongering on the TV and media which leads to a distrust by the general population of the poor - particularly poor blacks.
The extreme opposite, Political Correctness case, where the media go out of their way not to mention the race of a person responsible for a crime. This helps creates general suspicion and racism.

Free speech has gone out of the window. There are now so many social norms to be followed that it is no longer possible to describe a problem honestly. If you cannot analyze or describe a problem honestly you will never be able to solve it. Political Correctness leads to more social problems. There are now probably nearly as many black racists as there are white ones in America.

The general xenophobia presented each night on the TV news. It leads to mistrust and discrimination in general.

The injustice of the criminal justice system which sends a young non violent pot smoker to jail for 20 years after a 3rd strike, but lets a criminal banker get away with stealing $1.5bn scot free.

The number of people that are now on anti depressants - Ritalin, Prozac etc. with their harmful side effects. 10% of the population of America is now on these drugs.
Almost all of the gun massacres are by people linked to these drugs. These drugs greatly increase the risk that a depressive will commit a violent act - including murder and suicide.

A general exposure to violence and killing from governments starting pre-emptive wars  to violent images on the TV and violent video games.
It hardens attitudes that violence is "normal" behavior.

There are lots more SOCIAL reasons.

If you compare Switzerland to the US & UK - you will see that all of the above problems are far less severe in Switzerland.
Just about every household in Switzerland owns one or more guns.
The homicide rate in Switzerland is 1.2 per 100,000.

In the US the homicide rate is 4.7 per 100,000 or 4 times higher than Switzerland.

In the UK where guns are now completely banned the murder rate is 1.4 per 100,000 or slightly higher than Switzerland. It is now back to the level before guns were completely banned in 1997 (after increasing more than 50% after the ban).

Homicide rates do NOT go down when you ban guns.
The homicide rate is a social issue NOT a type of weapon or gun control issue.

Homicide rates in the UK did not go down in the UK when guns were completely banned after the Dunblane school massacre in 1997.
They didn't go down in Australia either when gun controls were imposed there.
