The brutal murder in Woolwich last week of Drummer Lee Rigby rightly caused shock and outrage. Inevitably there has been a media feeding frenzy about 'terrorist' attacks and home-grown radicalisation. British prime minister, David Cameron, felt it necessary to fly back from a key meeting in France to head up the British security response.
One slightly heartening piece of news to emerge from all the horror is that the PM has stated, at least for now, that there will be no knee-jerk security crack-down in the wake of this killing. Sure, security measures have been ramped up around military bases in the UK, but cynical calls from the securocrats to reanimate a proposed 'snoopers' charter', aka the draft Communications Data Bill, have for now been discounted. And rightly so - MI5 already has all the necessary powers to monitor suspects.
However, there does still seem to be a politically disingenuous view about the motivation behind this murder. Yet the suspects themselves made no secret of it - indeed they stayed at the scene of the crime for 20 minutes apparently encouraging photos and smart phone recordings in order to get across their message. When the police armed response team finally arrived, the suspects reportedly charged at the police brandishing knives and possibly a gun. They were shot, but not fatally. This may have been attempted 'suicide by cop' - delayed until they had said their piece.
This does not strike me as the actions of 'crazed killers' as has been reported in the media; rather it reminds me of the cold and calculated actions of Norwegian mass murderer,Anders Breivik. The Woolwich murder was designed to maximise the impact of the message in this social media age.
And the message being? Well, it was indeed captured on smart phone and sent out to the world. The killers clearly stated that this was a political action designed to highlight the gruesome violence daily meted out across North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia as a result of the western policy of military interventionism.

A very good article.
The Woolwich killer was :-
British born to devout Christian Nigerian immigrant parents
He converted to Islam in his teens.
He became influenced by Islamic hate preachers after the invasion of Iraq.
He lived in a very poor area with a high level of immigrants and high unemployment which already had a problem with racist attacks.
This in no way excuses the atrocity committed by the killer.
It does go a long way to explaining why it happened and why we could get more attacks of a similar nature in the future.
Changing the UK's Foreign Policy :-
to not interfere in the Middle East
withdrawing from the pointless Neocon war in Afghanistan
stopping the drone strikes in Pakistan (and Yemen) which are killing a lot of innocent civilians including women and children
would go a long way to reducing the risks of such attacks in the future.
American and UK Foreign Policy has succeeded in :-
changing a secular regime in Iraq to a more religious extreme one - the sectarian violence in Iraq continues
changing a secular regime in Libya into a country that is now governed by Islamic Extremists
Egypt is now governed by the Muslim Brotherhood
created a raging civil war in Yemen
It looks like the UK is seeking to overthrow a secular regime in Syria into one also governed by Islamic Extremists.
How does any of this make Britain more secure?
The UK should stop supporting American Foreign Policy.
American Foreign Policy is stirring up more religious and racial hatred and increasing the number of conflicts and wars in the world.
It has converted about 200 million more people to being enemies of the American government and supporters of Islamic Extremists.
Pakistan has gone from about 25% who consider the American government to be their enemy to 92% now.
That's about 100m people.
Then there is Egypt, Libya, Yemen etc.
