Fiscal Cliff in Household Budget terms

Government revenue is $2.4tn a year, spending is $3.5tn and the National Debt is $16.4 tn.

Let's put those numbers in Household budget terms.

Dear Mr Bank Manager I have maxed out my credit card. Can I please have an increase on my credit limit?

Let's see your details .

Your income is $24,000 a year
Your outgoings are $35,000 a year.
And your credit card balance is $164,000.

NO YOU CAN'T

But I am going to increase my income by $600 next year.

GET LOST

Don't buy that new car and don't give all that money away to your rich friends.
That would save you $10,000+ you might even get to be solvent in a while if you kept doing that.

There are $500bn+ of military spending and $500bn+ of Corporate Welfare that can easily be saved next year. But NOBODY is even discussing them.”
